EXCLUSIVE: Hard rock and heavy metal fans, your prayers to the devil have been answered. The rumours are true: Download Festival is coming to Australia’s rock city. The British music festival will make its Australian debut in Melbourne for one-day on March 24 at Flemington Racecourse.

“There’s definitely space for a heavy festival which we want to slowly grow, starting in Melbourne. We want this to be sustainable,” Live Nation’s Nigel Melder said.

Download Festival will be put on by Live Nation, Unified and Secret Sounds. “We have space for a crowd of 25,000 people. There will be 28 bands playing over four stages, not too many clashes. One third will be local bands.”

The last metal festival Australia had was Soundwave which ran into problems after expanding to two days.

“AJ Maddah (Soundwave) is not involved, AJ never was,” Melder said.

The line-up is announced November 9 and the rumour mill is in overdrive. System of a Down, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Paramore, Prophets of Rage and Northlane are highly likely.

A website accidentally went live last week spruiking an imminent announcement regarding Download Festival. “Did it make my job harder? Yes. But look at the passion of these fans, imagine if nobody cared? These fans are invested.”

The line-up is announced in T minus 5 days when you’ll jump out of bed singing “Wake up, grab a brush and put on a little make up.”Ticket prices are still to be decided.
